The Ukrainian government is making big moves to boost its drone technology with some recent news.
Combat-Ready Bird of Prey Drones
Ukraine’s Defense Ministry shared on March 26, 2025, that their homegrown Bird of Prey drone system is now ready for battle use. This drone, designed from lessons learned in real fights, targets enemy vehicles and strongholds. It can hit tough targets like tanks and artillery. “The Bird of Prey has already proven its effectiveness in destroying enemy armored vehicles and fortified firing positions,” the ministry emphasized. This step fits into Ukraine’s larger plan to strengthen its unmanned combat abilities.
Big Plans for Drone Purchases
Earlier this month, on March 10, the defense team laid out plans to massively grow its drone numbers. They’re aiming to buy about 4.5 million FPV drones in 2025, which is more than three times what they got last year. Hlib Kanevsky, leading the procurement efforts, mentioned that last year they got over 1.5 million drones, mostly from local makers. “This year, we expect even greater numbers, as the domestic defense sector is projected to provide around 4.5 million FPV drones in 2025,” he said. To make this happen, they’ve set aside over $2.6 billion, showing how serious they are about becoming less reliant on Western help.
